Past few days.

We've had quite a lot of downtime in the past few days, even though we were running a very nicely tuned server. I'm about ready to launch a huge ReachStats project, and I cannot have frequent downtime. So we have moved to fattwam's server. I didn't have SSH access while moving files, so I had to do everything very slowly by hand. I'm bound to make errors, but am quickly fixing anything I find.

A huge bug we have right now is that we have the database structure of a newer version of IPB, but running it on the file system of an older IPB. My only choice is to re-upload a fresh copy of the newer IPB and re-perform the modifications.

Forum structure changes

As Halo Reach is under 40ish days away, I've started the planning to organize some of our forums. This is my rough outline of what I think I'm going to do.

Halo 2 sub-forums might be combined and moved to the "Other Games" category.
MW2 sub-forums combined and moved to "Other Games"
Halo 3 and ODST combined, and Halo Reach separated
Halo Reach gets (News & General, Modding, Mods, Apps, Tuts) sub forums

Thats about it. Any comments or concerns?

Also,

Open ID was removed due to security problems
Facebook Connect was fixed.

Ongoing Attack.

It seems that our little attacker is continually spreading more bots and continuing to hit us more and more. I'm constantly tweaking the server trying to figure out a clean way to just eliminate this attack, but am causing various issues here and there.

Blame the 12 year old kid that is attacking a modding website. The best way to sum up this guy is by Detox himself.

Hosting a Halo site does not compare to hosting any other site. There are just far too many morons out in the world that their main goal every night is to annoy me. My phone number got leaked and I received a ton of spam txt messages, and got my voicemail hacked. (Didn't even know that was possible). I'd expect this kind of attitude and level of maturity if I was a top site, like se7ensins. However iBotModz is not. We are a small community yet people continue to attack us.

The recent downtime was caused by no attack. However this downtime got me thinking again. I do this for free, I earn 0 dollars back from the site due to the pathetic ad pay scale. Money out of my own pocket pays for the (domain, ipb renewals, and my hoster). What was once my hobby and fun thing to do is quickly becoming an annoyance. However, I will stay true to my word and keep this site running until Halo Reach. I built a very robust application for Halo Reach that I intend to use on this site. However, if this site becomes more of a hassle then hobby then I'll sell the script to a buyer and join their team of administrators.

I also don't know if I can trust/stay with our current host. One day I'm being canceled and dumped from the system. Then the next day I'm being asked to come back. If we have another one of these breaks. I will join fattwam server until I find a more permanent solution.

I had fun over the 4 years hosting, but its slowly dwindling down.

July 14, 2010 Update

As of now and over the past 2 days we've been under a DDoS attack. My bet is that it is the same person as last time. After I called no-ip (DNS service for botnets) I got his first account suspended, but its been about a month and he could re-spread in that time. It seems his army now is just re-loading the logo image trying to "bandwidth rape" us.

I've been writing a great deal of htaccess rules in order to prevent this. So far my rules have not only affected the bots, but also the legitimate users. I will continue to master this script to block all loads with maybe a 404 error to prevent resource consumption.

The attacks have had random IPs and 1 IP that visited the site far too much. I am hoping that IP was the attacker trying out his idea, before he plugged it into his booter.

As the site expands (or I hope to expand) with Reach Stats. I've written up a new set of rules since I'll be adding a fee-based system for ReachStats. (Doesn't affect current VIP/Donors. You are grandfathered in) More in depth news on that to come.

I'm still looking over the rules with some members in order to tweak and finalize them.

Random mysql timeouts.

I do not know currently how long this will last, but there is random blurts of the mysql server going down. Its lasting from a few seconds to a few minutes each time.

I have filed a ticket with our host. Will keep you updated.

DDOS Protection

The recent DDoS attacks cost me hundreds of dollars and rendered a gaming website useless and now life is over. [/sarcasm]

Optimization and tweaking will be taking place to get the server back up to what it was before. Expect short downtime spurts for the next 48 hours. The most recent downtime was caused because the bandwidth limit was at 10meg. lol
